Bufo Alvarius

The medicine of the toad — carried in prayer, song, and fire.

Bufo Alvarius, the Sonoran Desert toad, carries a secretion that contains 5-MeO-DMT — a medicine unlike any other. For generations, the Seri people of the Sonoran desert have known and held this medicine in prayer, song, and reverence.

At Phoenix Healing, our way of working with Bufo honours this lineage. It is not approached as a performance or an experience to be consumed, but as a ceremony carried in tradition, integrity, and care.

Most of our Bufo ceremonies are held outdoors, in the presence of the fire. The fire becomes our witness and teacher, a grounding force as participants enter into dissolution and renewal.

The ceremony is guided by prayer and song — a weaving of tradition that holds and protects the space. Each session is intimate and private, ensuring the medicine is approached with the depth it deserves.

Bufo is a threshold. It can dissolve the self, strip away identity and story, and open into silence, love, and the vastness of being. It can feel like death — and on the other side, rebirth.

This path is not always gentle. It asks for surrender, for letting go of control, for trust in what cannot be grasped. With preparation, presence, and integration, what emerges is often a profound sense of renewal.

  • Dissolution of the ego-self into unity
  • Encounters with silence, love, and truth
  • Release of emotional and energetic weight
  • Rebirth, renewal, and clarity of path

Bufo is a medicine of immense power. Without the right container, it can overwhelm. That is why we work only in settings we can fully hold — intimate, prayerful, and safe.

Every ceremony includes preparation and integration, so the experience is not just a moment of intensity but a path of lasting transformation.

If you feel called to meet Bufo, explore our Retreats or reach out through Contact to learn more about how we hold this medicine.
